Understanding Timber Profiles
Timber profiles come in many different shapes and sizes, each designed for a particular purpose. Some provide the finishing details around doors, walls and ceilings, while others form functional components of stairs, joinery and interior linings.
Understanding the terminology can make it much easier to find the right product for your project. Here’s an introduction to the main profile types available from The Timber Profile Co.
Architraves & Skirtings
Two of the most familiar interior timber profiles. Skirting runs along the base of a wall, helping protect the wall while creating a finished transition to the floor. Architraves frame doors and windows, covering the junction between the frame and surrounding wall.
Both are available in styles ranging from simple contemporary shapes to more detailed traditional profiles and are often selected together to create a consistent look.
Bolection Moulds
A decorative moulding traditionally used around doors, wall panels and other framed details. Bolection moulds project beyond the surfaces they surround, adding depth and definition.
They’re particularly associated with traditional and heritage detailing but can also be used to introduce texture and interest in contemporary interiors.
Ceiling Battens
Timber battens used across ceilings to create structure, detail or a decorative finish. Depending on the design, they can be used to define ceiling areas, create repeating patterns or contribute to a particular architectural style.
Dressed 4 Sides
Often abbreviated to D4S, this is timber that has been machined smooth and square on all four faces.
Rather than having a decorative moulded face, D4S provides a clean, simple section that can be used across a wide range of joinery, finishing and construction applications.
Handrails
Profiles shaped to provide a comfortable handhold along stairs, ramps and balustrades. Their shape needs to balance appearance with practical considerations such as grip and the requirements of the particular application.
Dowels
Round timber profiles available in a range of diameters. Dowels have many uses across joinery, furniture, architectural detailing and other timber applications, either as a functional component or a visible design feature.
Stair Stringers
Timber components used along a staircase to support or accommodate the stair treads and risers. Stringers can form an important structural and visual part of a timber staircase and may be machined to suit the staircase design.
Door Jambs
The timber sections that form the frame around a doorway. Door jambs provide the surfaces against which the door sits and are machined to suit different door, wall and installation requirements.
Tongue & Groove
Boards machined with a tongue along one edge and a corresponding groove along the other, allowing adjoining boards to fit neatly together.
Tongue and groove profiles can be used for applications such as wall and ceiling linings, where the repeated boards create a continuous timber surface.
Scotia Moulds
A smaller moulding with a concave curved profile. Scotia is commonly used to create a neat transition between adjoining surfaces or as a decorative finishing detail.
Its relatively simple shape makes it useful across a variety of interior finishing and joinery applications.
Dado
